He had served in the Royal Engineers during the Boer War, and when he returned to Grimsby he brought back an artillery shell as a souvenir. Thinking it was spent, he tried to open it with a hammer, and it blew up. Taken to Grimsby Hospital, but died from a reaction to the chloroform given to him before the operation would have taken place.
